Today, I’m sharing a quick worksheet to go along with my new piece, “At The Edge”. Students have plenty of octave jumps so this exercise is aimed at getting them comfortable moving the same chord/cluster up and down octaves. When my students are learning jumps, we discuss what note to look for as they move up and down the keys. When my students are learning jumps, we discuss what note to look for as they move up and down the keys. If they’re trying to find 3 notes, it gets to be too much so try to help them look for the top or bottom note and just keep their hand in position to grab the other note(s).
Then the Left Hand can be practiced separately at first and put together later. This is very basic but when they’re put together, the syncopation will throw them off a bit. Make sure to spend time tapping hands and saying L/R before attempting hands together!
I use these worksheets like “Dozen A Day” technique practices that also prepare students for their next solo piece. Check out “At The Edge” to apply these techniques – such a fun beat and a melody that you can’t stop humming!
